Description

Bordered to the south by the Mediterranean and to the north by the Via Domitia (Domitian Way), the Canal du Midi was first opened up by Pierre-Paul Riquet. Its route links to the port Sète or continues to the Petite Camargue. The canal basin covers 7500 hectares (18 km long and 5 km wide) and provides a living for 2000 people. Since ancient times, oysters and shellfish have been cultivated here, producing more than half the oysters eaten in France. This is the Bouzigues oyster, both the flat and the Portuguese varieties. The Musée de l’étang de Thau (museum of the Thau lagoon) in Bouzigues has an exhibition to do with the fishing trade and the cultivation of oysters and mussels.
